The Cadet Observer option available to second class cadets on cruise, who meet the standards for the program; should act on this opportunity. As a cadet on a Commercial Ship, one learns the full aspect of shipping, and he or she obtains a real world view of life aboard a commercial ship.
The Experience
Shipping out on a commercial vessel allows the cadet to experience the real world of shipping. The experience and knowledge which is obtained from shipping out provides an excellent base for senior cruise and especially if the cadet ships out after graduation.
The Watches
The cadet will stand watches on the ship as he would on the Training Ship. While on a commercial ship, a cadet will stand significantly more watches and be much more involved with the watch operation. The cadet is able to develop skills required to run the watch, and also become familiar with the watch procedures.
The Work
The work which a cadet will do while onboard a commercial ship greatly varies depending on the type of vessel, the crew, and the captain.
The Knowledge
While on a commercial ship, everything that the cadet learned from classes and Mug Cruise is utilized. The regular shipboard operations which the cadet is involved in reinforces what the cadet has learned, while also providing great hands on experience to the ship board operations. The knowledge earned from a commercial ship supersedes that from the second class crusie.
